Have you ever wondered that…
Why do stars glow?
Why do rivers flow?
Why does life come to resist?
Does God actually exist?
From nothing comes nothing. The Universe simply cannot have popped into existence uncaused cause. Belief in God/Gods/Deities, it seems arises naturally the world over. It seems that there is some element common to all human experience that causes us to look for something transcendent on which to build our lives, to ask the question “Does God exist?” and to affirm at least in some sense, he does.
Before I continue, let me ask you a question, “Just once wouldn’t you love for someone to simply show you the evidence for God’s existence? No arm-twisting. No statement stating that “You just have to believe.” Well, here is an attempt to candidly offer some of the reasons which would suggest that God does exist.
Now, let us consider this first that if a person opposes even the possibility of there being a God, then any evidence cannot be rationalized or explained away. It is like if someone refuses to believe that people have walked on the moon, then no amount of information is going to change their thought process, be it satellite footage of astronauts, walking on the moon, interview with the astronauts or the moon rocks. All the pieces of evidence would be worthless because the person has already concluded in his belief system that people cannot go to the moon.
when it comes to the possibility of the God’s existence, the holy book of Bible states that there are people who have sufficient evidence but they have suppressed the truth, reasons remain unknown. On the other hand, people who seek God in the various sects of holy books of various religions, it is stated in them in God’s own words (if he is there) that “If you will seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you. I don’t stay in temples, churches, mosques or gurudwaras. I am a shining star and I can be felt by your soul as I’m the supreme soul and you all are my children.” Every religion states the same. Prophet Mohammed had quoted that “Allah is noor. (Allah is light.)”, Jesus had quoted “God is light.”, Sai baba had quoted ” Sabka malik ek. (There is only one God.)”, Vahe-Guru had quoted “Ek Omkar, Satnaam. (There is only one and he is the only truth.)” etc.
Hence, there are many pieces of evidence which prove that there is some supreme power, call it Ram, Allah, Jesus or Vahe-Guru. For example:
- The first proof is that billions of people who represent diverse sociological, intellectual, emotional and educational backgrounds believe that there is a creator, a God to be worshipped. But the fact that so many people believe something certainly doesn’t make it true. But, when so many people throughout the ages are so personally convinced that God exists, then can one deny that with absolute confidence that they are all mistaken?
- Secondly, the complexity of our planet points to a deliberate designer who not only created the Universe but also helps in sustaining it. Or else, if the above point is denied, then won’t it mean that all the machines in the world have created themselves because things can be created on its own? How about the human DNA? A DNA isn’t that easy to be created even by having the richest of scientific technologies. So, would that mean a DNA got created on its own? If yes, then how? Why two DNA structures don’t match and a dog doesn’t have a cat’s properties and vice-a-versa? So arguably, nothing must have created a DNA? How does nothing create something? It’s a delusion every atheist probably suffers from. Professor Richard Dawkins in one of his interviews tries defining that nothing creates something, but soon ends up stating that there is something mysterious that must have started up the Universe.
- Thirdly, some years back there was a news about ‘Mystifying Madonna,’ which stated that in the year 1995, a statue of Madonna in Rome shed tears of blood repeatedly in a month. All scientific equipment including X-Rays, CAT’s failed to explain the mystery and thus theologians, historians and even doctors confirmed this event as paranormal and supernatural, i.e. beyond human understanding.
- Fourthly, how about the emotions? Areas of feelings like courage, dying for a cause, love, dignity, duty and compassion, anger and revulsion etc., where did these originate from? If people are merely products of physical evolution like stars, moon, sky etc. confining of “Survival of the fittest- Darwin’s theory,” then why do we feel the emotions? Where do we get the intuitive feeling of right and wrong? Our conscience can be well explained by a creator who cares about the decisions and harmony of the humanity.
At the end, it is worth noting an argument that the claim about God’s existence can be made more plausible by the fact of widespread religious beliefs. This argument can be called as the argument of desire. It begins with the observation that our natural instincts generally serves us well. Every creature is born with an instinct for food because food sustains us, similarly, each one of us longs for meaningful relationships because community and friendship allow us to flourish. Generally, if we have an innate desire for a thing then that thing both exists and is good for us.
Thus, the natural instinct to look to the transcendent is a simple evidence which hints at its existence.
